Workplace safety is always a concern not just among employers, but also with employees. Throughout the year, there are months dedicated to certain safety topics to help promote awareness. For example, March is National Ladder Safety Month, May is National Electrical Safety Month and September is National Preparedness Month. However, the most important topic occurs in June, which is National Safety Month.
The National Safety Council started National Safety Month in 1996. The need for a safe workplace has increased steadily in the past decade due to the number of workplace injuries and deaths. For instance, in 2020 there were over four million work-related injuries that required medical attention. Also, there were over 200,000 injury-related deaths – a 16% increase from 2019!
During National Safety Month, the National Safety Council discusses an important safety topic each week via membership:
· Week 1: Musculoskeletal Disorders – Sprains, back pain, and carpel tunnel syndrome and more.
· Week 2: Workplace Impairment – Substance use (and/or abuse) on the job, including stress and fatigue.
· Week 3: Injury Prevention – Methods of preventative workplace injuries.
· Week 4: Slips, Trips, and Falls – Learning how to reduce injuries from slips, trips and falls.
